You know, i always forget to talk about what me and my studio are up to. This has been a busy summer (not that i'm short on montauk beach excursions). We've been slammed with a commision of nine segments for the new Electric Company for Sesame St. workshop. I know I slag off doing projects for kids, but i really enjoyed animating these.
In addition to the Electric Company Job, we've been busy on a number of fine art commisions, including a colossal mural for the new Salvation Army headquarters in Manhattan, a project that i'm really excited about.
Recently, we just wrapped up a music video for Disney featuring the bird filled "Tiki Room" (above). It was a fun project because I love the challenges of animating along side live action characters. We also did several segments of a childrens music video for "Ralph's World", another Disney show, both were done through Ghost Robot productions. ALSO we animated a Three minute video for Samantics Productions, kind of a jazzy school house rock type thing.
And, as always, on the forefront is a new independent animated film, which I've mentioned very often, the film "Masks", a collaboration with the composer of "Drink", Karl vonKries. We had a sneak preview of it last week at Marthas Vinyard Film Festival, and I was stoked about the reaction it got. It's by far my best work. What are you up to?

PAT! congratulations on your first real live Flash production. And now, I open the floor for everyone to rip you to shreds for it.
ha.. yep. guilty. and it's worse.. i actually kind of learned to like flash! DOH! wait.. can you hear my pencil crying?
"i actually kind of learned to like flash! "
Oh, my gosh, it's happened !
hey, flash isn't THAT bad :[
Don't you have a Cintiq? That would make computer drawing so much more fun than my small 3x5 tablet.
I do have a cintiq, which makes it a bit better. But really, I'm still chained to my disc and pencil, I just can't seem to get over the whole vector crap. Old dog, ya know?
Vectors are my least favorite thing to work with for animating. (I use both Flash and Toonboom, but don't usually enjoy the experience .)
For animating on Cintiq I prefer a bitmap application like TVPaint or even the tablet mode in Digicel Flipbook. (but Flipbook still doesn't have the cool "virtual disc" rotation that TVPaint has.)
i think we can all agree that flash isn't all bad. it's great for adding quick elements and as long as you don't get tween-happy, it looks pretty solid.
MMM I SURE DO LOOOOVE MOTION TWEENS. SHAPE TWEENS ALWAYS YIELD THE BEST RESULTS! Tweens tweens tweens! I'm going to use pre-drawn sprites to make an award winning animation!
Have you seen Flash CS4's inverse kinematic bone system now? I'm pretty sure they're out to make traditional animators obsolete. I won't be surprised if someone develops a method for motion capture for flash and then tries to promote it as a cheaper method of animating than hiring a trained animator [tin foil hat goes here]

I loved your animatic when you showed it to our class! I can't wait till you finish it!
And yeah...I'm still workin' for "The Man" @ Lil Airplane.. Lol.
