Classical art, the meaningful expression and spine tingling emotion that exudes timelessness and inspiration, is apparently alive and well. The large painting by Graydon Parrish, The Cycle of Terror and Tragedy: September 11, 2001, in the New Britain (Connecticut) Museum of Art, reminds us all what painting can express, above all other mediums and even language itself. This level of communication can easily be thought of as dead, and I didn't find it surprizing that this piece has been railed on by many "top critics" of art. 
Graydon Parrish brings us back to a time in human history when painters were commissioned for extraordinary work. Graydon has filled this piece with horrific expressions of unbelievable pain and suffering, something we all endured that horrible day and can relate to all too well. The symbolism alone is worth decades of study and reflection. It's definitely worth a visit to the New Britain Museum of Art. At first I thought it was a photo collage. Did he use photo reference, or paint from life?
he painted from life, as well as any ref he could find i'm sure. this dude can paint. and btw, you can tell when things are photo ref'd, they lack that classical look.
Absolutely breath taking, so moving.
the set up looks a lot like the animation team AES+F.
check it out when you get a chance. these russian animators just about stole the venice biennale last year with their film "last riot".

The endless claptrap of critics over the centuriesis disgusting.
I respect/understand/appreciate many forms of fine art. Anything that is strong, genuine.
Far to many dilettantes today.
Classical, naturalistic art is not dead. it is about passion and connection, more than intellect.
Fine classical painting succeeds for this reason, and also that it makes the world a better place, and more beautiful.
...ALSO, all of the many "would-be" artists today criticize it as they are unable to do it themselves, and they know it.
many would relish and adore that which fine painting represents if they fine tuned their senses, abilities, and understanding.
Why do we revere so the "old masters" ..?!
Because nobody can do it today, and the quality of artist's materials, pigmetns, information now is far more than it ever was for them.
What does this say?
As Picasso said towards the end, losing followers to other forms of contemporary art, "It is nothing more than Dada rebadged as something else.."
Very, very few even come close to simulating a Rembrandt or Velasquez in technique.
ALL of this said, this picture is not entirely successful in my humble opinion (LOL)..
I find it rather *kitsch*.
Typical of classical painters who have no imagination of their own trying to create a composition.
People like this revere Ives Gammell..and his flailing attempts were just as kitsch.
Give me a creator! A master, like Waterhouse, Rembrandt..do you think they set-up models in those various scenes, within those various setting?!
